Für viele Soul-Fans war es schlicht und ergreifend das Album des Jahres: Was Sänger, Songwriter, Musiker, Produzent und Arrangeur Raphael Saadiq mit seinem dritten Solo-Longplayer "The Way I See It" ablieferte, hatte ohne Zweifel das Zeug zum Genre-Klassiker. Der im Motown- und Stax-Style gehaltene Longplayer, der u.a. Gastauftritte von Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder und Jay-Z enthält, wurde nicht nur von der iTunes-Musikredaktion in den USA zum Album des Jahres gewählt, sondern auch in drei Kategorien für einen Grammy nominiert ("Best R&B Album", "Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance" und "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group").
Seit seinen Musikbusiness-Anfangstagen in den Achtzigern als Mitglied der Genre-prägenden Formation Tony! Toni! Toné! bis hin zu seinen Arbeiten als preisgekrönter Produzent von Künstlern wie Joss Stone, The Roots, Snoop Dogg, John Legend sowie seinen eigenen Solo-Alben blieb Saadiq seiner Linie stets treu.
