Im September 2012 wäre der legendäre kanadische Pianist Glenn Gould 80 Jahre alt geworden, im Oktober 2012 jährt sich sein Todestag zum 30. Mal. Sony Classical präsentiert aus diesem Anlass
eine wertvolle DVD-Edition mit allen TV-Sendungen des kanadischen Senders CBC, die zwischen
1954 und 1977 entstanden. Kaum ein Pianist hat die Wahrnehmung von klassischer Musik, insbesondere die von Bach, so dramatisch geändert wie der junge Glenn Gould – und kaum ein Künstler wurde so schnell zur Legende wie der „James Dean des Klaviers“. Die Box enthält über 19 Stunden an Material – alle CBC-Sendungen im Original und in voller Länge. TV-Specials, Konzerte, Interviews, Diskussionsrunden und Dokumentarisches ermöglichen es, den „Kosmos Gould“ zu erschließen Ein Großteil des Materials ist erstmals seit der Ausstrahlung wieder verfügbar. Alle DVDs sind im Original ohne Untertitel. Die Box enthält neben bisher unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen Goulds mit Werken von Scriabin, Schönberg, Strawinksy, Walton, Hindemith, Bartok, Coplan, Poulenc und Prokofieff 3 Stunden "Conversations with Glenn Gould", den legendären Interviews von Humphry Burton, und wird durch ein umfangreiches farbiges Booklet ergänzt.

"Auch bei Glenn Gould muss man nicht zweimal hinschauen, um zu begreifen, welches Wunder hier vor einem steht. Selbst als Dirigent von Mahlers "Zweiter" macht er noch bella figura, auch wenn manche Bewegung ein wenig manieriert wirkt. Und in Beethovens erstem Klavierkonzert strahlt er vom Flügel mehr Inspiration aus als Dirigent und Orchestermusiker zusammen. Es ist also keineswegs nur Bachs Klavierwerk, das Gould seit den fünfziger bis in die siebziger Jahre vor der Verstaubung rettete. Überhaupt erfährt man in dieser 10-CD-Kompilation von TV-Aufzeichnungen sehr viel mehr über den Künstler-Menschen Glenn Gould - er war ja immer beides in eins - und über sein originäres Kunstschaffen, polyphone Sprechdramolette und anderes mehr. Am Verwirrendsten und Aufschlussreichsten ist Goulds Reden über Musik. Darüber, wie er entdeckt hat, dass ein laufendes Fernsehgerät oder Radio oder auch zweier Radios das Üben einer Mozart-Fuge entscheidend verbessere, wie er darauf kam, dabei zu singen, wie er das gezielte Weghören vom eigenen Spiel trainierte. Gould brauchte diese ungeheure Freiheit und die Emanzipation von den großen Meistern…"

"Gould besaß […] nicht nur die Gabe, scheinbar aus dem Stand heraus mitreißend und tiefsinnig über die Geheimnisse von großer Musik zu plaudern. Er war sich selbst für so manche Gags nicht zu schade. Damit sind nicht seine parodistischen Auftritte etwa als langmähniger Hippie "Dr. Karlheinz Kloppweiser" gemeint; 1975 schmiss sich Gould tatsächlich auch in einen schlabbrigen Sommeranzug, um ein herrlich komisches Folk-Ständchen hinzulegen. Mit solchen Archivaufnahmen des kanadischen Fernseh- und Radiosenders CBC ist die 10 DVD-Box randvoll gepackt. Denn in Goulds filmischem Nachlass aus dem Zeitraum 1954 bis 1977 finden sich Raritäten zuhauf. Angefangen vom ersten Fernsehauftritt 1954 über sein erstes Dirigat (1957 mit Mahler!) bis zum Roadmovie "The Idea Of North" von 1970.
