Alex Jacobowitz

Obwohl er während des Studiums an der Ithaca School of Music (New York) alle Schlaginstrumente spielen musste, verliebte er sich in den besonderen Klang des Xylophons. Er fragte seinen Professor, was dazu nötig sei, ein weltklasse-Xylophonsolist zu werden, worauf dieser nur lachte und antwortete: »So etwas gibt es nicht!« Genau dann entschied sich Alex, so etwas zu werden! - Er studierte Xylophon mit Gordon Stout und Leigh Howard Stevens, gewann 1981 den ersten Preis der DCI Individual Keyboard Competition in Montreal und wurde einer der wenigen professionellen Xylophonsolisten der Welt. Nach einem Jahr mit dem Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra ließ er das Leben als Orchesterschlagzeuger hinter sich (siehe "Tschaik 4") und ist seither auf der ganzen Welt als Xylophonsolist tätig. Solo-Auftritte im europäischen Fernsehen, Radioporträts und unzählige Zeitungsberichte der letzten Jahre markieren seinen unermüdlichen Einsatz für das Wahre, Schöne, Gute. Durch einen Kibbuz-Aufenthalt in Israel 1982-3 entdeckte er die eigenen Wurzeln aufs neue und fand seinen Weg zum traditionellen Judentum. Seit 1989 hat er seinen ständigen Wohnsitz bei Jerusalem. Musik sei, so Jacobowitz, eine Sprache, die ihm dem Schöpfer näher bringe. So gilt sein Streben nicht nur der Liebe zur Musik, sondern ebenso der steten Suche nach Nähe zu seinem Schöpfer - den Dienst der Hände mit der Ergebenheit des Herzens zu vereinen. Um seine Botschaft von Menschlichkeit, Verständigung und Toleranz sowie die Schönheit der Musik mit so vielen Menschen wie möglich zu teilen, hat er sich für den unmittelbaren Kontakt zu seinen Zuhörern entschieden und reist jeden Sommer mit seinem Instrument durch die Großstädte Europas, wo er in den Fußgängerzonen täglich Tausende von Zuhörern mit seiner Mischung aus klassischem Konzert und New Yorker Street Show begeistert. In den Wintermonaten bereitet er neue Aufnahmen vor, schreibt seine Geschichten und verfolgt die weithin konventionellere Tätigkeit im Konzertsaal.

was born in 1960 in New York. An undergraduate at the State University of New York, he had to study all percussion instruments, but he fell in love with the special sound of the xylophone. He asked his teacher what was necesssary to become a world-class xylophonist, but he only laughed and answered: "There is no such thing!" - That's when Alex decided to become such a thing. Jacobowitz went to study with Gordon Stout and Leigh Howard Stevens, in 1981 won the 1st prize at the DCI Individual Keyboard Competition in Montreal and became one of the few professional xylophone soloists in the world. After a year with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, he left the life of an orchestral percussionist behind (see "Tschaik 4") and ever since tours the world as a xylophone soloist. Solo performances on European television, radio shows and countless newspaper articles in the past years mark his search for the "True, the Beautiful and the Good". While working as a kibbutz volunteer in Israel in 1982-3, he returned to traditional Judaism, and since 1989 calls Jerusalem his home. "Music is a language that brings me closer to the Creator," says Jacobowitz. Therefore one of his major goals as a performer is to combine his love of music and his personal musical growth with the search for closeness to the Creator - to learn how to combine service of the hands with dedication of the heart. Alex Jacobowitz wishes to
share his message of humanity, communication and tolerance, along with the beauty of music, with as many people as possible. Every summer he travels throughout Europe, playing in the pedestrian areas of the larger cities. This way he can more directly contact his audience. Every day he reaches out to thousands of people in this way, and delights them with his special mixture of classical concert and New York street show. During the winter months he prepares new recordings, writes his stories and follows a more "conventional" career inside concert halls.
